Who Is Poor?

Who are the poor?
A lot of people around me, especially those who have never been to Africa, would describe it as a poor continent. People often have the perception that Africa is plagued with AIDS, and filled with orphans and poverty (materialistic poverty that is). I am not saying that these attributes aren’t present in Africa to some extent, but I will not say that Africans are poor.
Uganda is rich with resources. People there live a self-sufficient life where they grow their own food, raise their own cattle and live off of these resources. Life in Tabiro (the village that I visit) is simple and good. There is no running water, but there is a water pump. There is no electricity, but people light a candle when it is dark and go to bed when it’s burnt. There are no televisions, but people are entertained by talking and exchanging stories.
You might be wondering- if I don’t see Uganda, or Tabiro specifically, as poor, then why am I going? And more importantly, why am I asking for your support to go? Here is the situation- although I do not view the people of Tabiro as being poor, there are a lot of needs that have to be met. I am not going to Tabiro to ensure that every hut in the village will have a TV or that running water will be readily available at people’s disposal. But I am going to make sure that the basic needs for people will be met in the future. Basic needs such as clean drinking water, medication (we run AIDs testing when we are there, but that can be saved for another blog), and education.
Friends, being poor materialistically is a blessing! But not having basic human survival needs is a struggle. Be part of the change, help me help Tabiro!
